Statement on Helsinki Summit

When the integrity of our elections is threatened, leaders from both parties have a responsibility to unite and protect our democracy.

President Trump’s comments today in Helsinki are dangerous and dishonest. American intelligence officers have confirmed that Russian agents attempted to interfere with the 2016 election. They intended to turn Americans against each other and undermine the foundation of our democracy.

The President’s denial of these facts and defense of Vladimir Putin insult our law enforcement officers, diminish our country on the world stage, and invite our adversaries to subvert our elections again. Americans deserve to know that our democracy is safe and that all the relevant facts regarding Russian interference in the 2016 election will be unearthed. I am grateful to see Congressman Lloyd Smucker condemning Trump’s comments today. I urge him to strengthen the security of our election systems and pass legislation to protect the independence of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation.
